About Me
My story with Popping
Dear Popping:
Hi!
Although I've known you for a long time, you probably don't know me, since the way we met was a bit goofy. Don’t you remember the third year of primary school when a local popping dance group was recruiting young dancers? I participated, but I thought it was an audition for a theater performance, so I sang my favorite song on stage… That was embarrassing. However, I was selected, though I still don’t know why.
From then on, my childhood was filled with your moves: practicing routines, memorizing elements, and watching freestyle battles.
As I spent more than 8 years with you, you became a bridge for me to connect with others. Thanks to you, I talked a lot with college students from the China Academy of Art in rooms where mirrors were covered with sweat and steam, and with New York poppers and break dancers after my summer classes. I sometimes joke:"My limbs articulate emotion better than my words."
Dude, you are not only my friend but my remedy. When I'm emotionally collapsed, I sever the connection between my mind and body, letting you and your music take control. You give me a chance to escape, and then you brutally bring me back to reality, but remind me to be courageous. I know this sounds cliché, but it’s true.
So, I built this website for you. Thank you.
Sincerely
Michael Yao
